John 13:34-35

A new command I give you:  Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

In these verses Jesus is telling His disciples what defines discipleship, and that is to love one another.  The word used here for “new” does not indicate something just revealed but has the meaning suggesting “renewed” or “refreshed”.  The Old Testament commanded: “love your neighbor as yourself”. Jesus was expanding and refreshing this commandment to be used within a new relationship, the relationship between His disciples.   Christians are no longer just neighbors but brothers and sisters in the kingdom of God.

This commandment was also not an option because Jesus said “you must love one another”.  If anyone professes faith in Christ then they are indeed His disciple and are obligated to love their brothers in sisters in the Lord.  And, if we profess to be believers can we love our fellow Christians without worshipping and fellowshipping together and encouraging one another and our faith?
